Achilles Tendon Pain (Achilles Tendonitis)

Achilles Tendon Pain

Definition

Inflammation of the Achilles tendon (the tendon that connects the muscles of the calf to the heel).

Symptoms

Patients present a shooting pain, burning pain, or even an extremely piercing pain in the affected heel when walking or running. Ankle flexibility is limited and inflammation is occurred above the heel. The tendon located at the back of the heel is usually painful to touch and the skin over the tendon may be swollen and warm. If Achilles tendonitis is left untreated, there is danger of weak and ruptured tendon.

Treatment

Orthotics like our Stabilizer Insoles help to reduce medial tendo-achilles traction which in turn reduce the pain. Athletes should do a thorough stretching exercise to warm-up the muscles properly, limit running/walking distance, and apply ice after activities.

Additional Treatment

A Heel Cup elevates the heel to reduce stress and pressure on the Achilles tendon.

Exercises

Achilles and calf muscle stretches.
